This kitchen had the original set of cabinets built in 1958. While they were quality cabinets for the time, the owners wished for a more modern and updated look. We were commissioned to fabricate new cabinets and countertops, as well as new face framing and doors for an existing built-in cabinet.
The owners gave the walls a fresh coat of paint to liven up the appearance of the kitchen and give it a totally new look.
The walls of this home were very much out of plumb, 5/8" in 36," as well as the floor being very much out of level. To use factory built cabinets would have meant a lot of shimming and moldings to hide the shims. Also the soffit was not centered on the window, resulting in the wall cabinet on the left being 1 1/2" wider than the cabinet on the right to be able to retain uniform margins. The owners have removed the original valance for ease of painting, and I have removed the cove moldings going all the way around the cabinets to facilitate scribing the new cabinet end panels to the wall.
The original cabinet design does not allow for modern day appliances to fit very well. As you can see, the apartment sized refrigerator is wedged tightly between floor and wall cabinet. There is no range hood over the stove, meaning poor lighting to cook by, and grease everywhere.
The built in wall cabinet has fixed shelves, and only one shelf in the top half.
We removed the fixed shelf, installed pilasters, fabricated two new shelves, face frame and doors. The owner painted the interior.
Hard Maple was used for the new kitchen cabinets, and arch top doors for the upper cabinets.
All cabinets having exposed ends were fabricated with raised panels, mitered to the face frames. Mouldings around the top and bottoms of the cabinets give the completed installation a classy look.
With a bit more space for a bigger refrigerator and a self venting range hood over the stove, the kitchen is now more functional and appealing.
Tip down sink fronts provide storage for sponges and scouring pads, and the pull out tray provides a place for paper towels and cleaning supplies. The new faucet has a pull out spray head.
Though most modern base cabinets only have a 12" deep shelf, the owner desired to have full depth shelves.
All drawer boxes were fabricated from 3/4" hard maple, and dovetailed together.
Drawer slides are heavy duty, full extension with a soft, self closing feature.
All cabinets have natural maple interiors and feature adjustable shelves. Door hinges are concealed.
The valance was sculpted to mimic the style of the doors and was recessed to allow for chamfering of the cabinet corners.
